After guiding Team USA to its fifth consecutive Olympic gold medal, LeBron James has given this year’s squad a new nickname: “The Avengers.”
Following Saturday’s 98-87 victory over France in the gold-medal game at the Paris Olympics, James announced the team’s superhero-inspired moniker. This adds to his own nickname from earlier in the Olympics, “Captain LeMerica,” and fits well with the theme.
Though it’s not clear who on the team would be Thor, Iron Man, or the Hulk, fans can certainly make their guesses. Much like the famous comic book heroes, this year’s Team USA was packed with NBA stars. With LeBron James, Stephen Curry, Kevin Durant, and Joel Embiid, the team boasted a remarkable eight MVP awards among them.
The roster was so deep that even some of the league’s top players, like Jayson Tatum, struggled to get consistent playing time. Tatum, who led the Boston Celtics to the 2024 NBA championship, had several games where he did not play.
Despite the star power and occasional bench time, the team came together flawlessly to achieve their ultimate goal. Like the Avengers, they put their egos aside and reached new heights on the international stage.
This year’s squad will likely serve as a model for future Team USA rosters as they aim to continue their streak of gold medal wins.
